Positive Thinking Can Hurt You?!

Jun 13, 2020

Does positive thinking really help?! So you want to build a strong brand make more money and reach more people. Does thinking positively really help you get there? As a certified coach, I can tell you that based on the science of positive psychology, if you just think about the end result, if you just think positively about reaching your goal, it might affect your performance negatively. Based on research done by Gabriele Oettingen, we are now familiar with a concept called "Mental Contrasting".

What does it mean? It means you should not only be positive and think positively about reaching your goal and about the end result, but you have to be realistic about the journey to reach that goal! So, be positive about the end result but be realistic about the hurdles about the roadblocks along the way. So let's say you want to lose weight! Yes! Think positively about the end result! I can lose 5 pounds,  10 pounds, 20 pounds! But be realistic about the hurdles about the setbacks, about the problems and the challenges along the way; for example, about the fact that you have to prepare your meals every day, you have to count your calories every meal and so on and so forth.

So, what type of positive thinking is really helpful? Mental contrasting! Think positively about the end result, but be realistic about the hurdles along the way.

My question to you is: "Are you using mental contrasting?"
